Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Corruption remains a significant impediment to economic growth and social development in Nigeria, with Gombe Local Government experiencing its share of challenges. Newspaper campaigns, through investigative reporting, editorials, and public advocacy, have emerged as essential tools in combating corruption by exposing corrupt practices and holding public officials accountable. The effectiveness of these campaigns, however, depends largely on how the public perceives them in terms of credibility, objectivity, and impact. Studies from recent years underscore that consistent and objective media campaigns are pivotal in shaping public opinion and fostering anti-corruption attitudes (Olawale & Ibrahim, 2023). This study explores public perceptions of newspaper campaigns against corruption in Gombe Local Government, focusing on their effectiveness and limitations.
